SAINT LUKÁC'S CHAPEL

2063 Szarvaskút-Váralja, hrs. 002.

The St. Lukács chapel in Szarvaskút was built under Austrian rule in 1855, even before the settlement. Fortunately, he was never injured in any war or accident. It still looks the same today, although it was replastered once. However, the interior is completely different, only the wooden altar cross is original. The chapel is still used by the faithful today, but the residents of Szarvaskút-Váralja also go to the church in Bobófalv. Since Golgotha was built, many church celebrations have been held here. The chapel has been open to tourists since 2014.
The roof of the building is made of very high quality wooden shingles, as they have not been destroyed in more than 160 years! Under the roof, in the place protected from the rain, above the entrance, the following Latin saying can be read: "Magnificat anima mea Dominum", that is, My soul magnifies the Lord. This inscription is also original. The sentence above is the beginning of the song with which the Virgin Mary responded to her greeting during her visit to Elizabeth, Zechariah's wife, announcing that she was pregnant with Jesus. This song can be found in the Gospel of St. Luke, hence the name of the chapel.
